Developmental Psychopathology in Childhood
1965 - 1972
During this period, clinical child psychology emphasized diagnostic assessment methods in child psychiatry that integrated structured interviews, play-based observation, and reliance on reliable informants to guide diagnosis and treatment planning. There was an emergent emphasis on brief or time-limited psychotherapy for children, evaluating efficacy, criteria for selection, and technique under real-world constraints. Clinical practice settings and multidisciplinary collaboration in pediatric mental health became central, highlighting the roles of clinical psychologists, liaison with pediatrics, and diverse camps of care. Behavioral development and adjustment outcomes were studied using representative samples, hospital experiences, and therapy frequency effects on development. Discussions of normality versus pathology and long-term developmental trajectories shaped understanding of childhood psychodynamics and outcomes.
